Google Earth in new Audi A8

Owners of the new Audi A8 will be able to use services like Google Earth to search for points of interest, if they choose the optional integrated GPRS/EDGE modem linked to the latest generation MMI navigation plus.

The results are then displayed on the onboard map or used as destinations for route calculation. A8 owners will also be able to plan destinations in Google Maps (or on Audi’s web portal) at home or in the office, then retrieve the information in the car.

This new technology will be further enhanced in mid 2010, when Audi launch a new UMTS modem. This will enable faster data transfer as well as allowing simultaneous voice and data connections. Using this new modem Audi will become the first motor manufacturer to integrate Google Earth with the car’s sat-nav system.

With Google Earth on the eight-inch LCD, the Google Earth imagery and 3D terrain model are combined with the detailed street network from the navigation database. The MMI navigation system also analyses navigation data to help predict driving conditions and relay information to the control units for the automatic cruise control (with Stop & Go), adaptive lights and the eight-speed tiptronic gearbox.
