Lamborghini takes off-road route

One of the undoubted stars of the Geneva Motor Show was the Lamborghini Urus SUV, which will go on sale later this year.

Entering the SUV market is a route that many manufacturers are taking.

Bentley caused quite a stir when it launched the Bentayga, more recently Maserati launched its Levante. Among the others believed to be scrambling to get in on the buoyant SUV market are Rolls Royce, Ferrari and even our own Lotus.

What would Colin Chapman think of a Lotus SUV?

Those with long memories may point out that this is not the first Lamborghini designed to tackle more than just road-going conditions.

The business began with the manufacture of tractors, before Ferruccio Lamborghini set out in 1963 to produce a grand touring car that could compete with established marques like Ferrari.

It may be a four-door, four-seater, four-wheel drive vehicle, but anything with the Lamborghini badge clearly has to have performance that befits the famous name.

Power for the Urus comes from a four-litre twin-turbo V8 that delivers 650 hp and 850 Nm or torque. Lamborghini claims this is one of the highest power outputs in its class and the best weight-to-power ratio at 3.38 kg/hp.

The result is 0-62 mph acceleration in 3.6 seconds, powering on to 124 mph (200 km/h) in just 12.8 seconds. The top speed is said to be 190 mph.

To deliver that prodigious power to the road, the Urus has a four-wheel-drive system with active torque vectoring and four-wheel steering.

Adaptive air suspension aims to satisfy the needs for both road and off-road use. A roll stabilisation system aims to keep a vehicle, with an inevitably higher centre of gravity, on an even keel.

Asked if an SUV really fitted into the Lamborghini stable, Stefano Domenicali, Automobili Lamborghini Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, said:

“It is a true Lamborghini in terms of design, performance, driving dynamics and emotion as well as drivable every day in a range of environments.

“It is the culmination of intensive development and passionate skill to create a new breed of bull: a Super SUV that transcends the boundaries of expectations and opens the door to new possibilities, for both our brand and our customers."
