New Range Rover slots in above Evoque

Encouraged by the huge success of the Range Rover Evoque, Land Rover has launched the new Range Rover Velar to fill the gap between the small Range Rover and the Range Rover Sport.

The new Range Rover Velar is due to go on sale from this summer with prices starting at £44,830, bringing the number of Range Rover models to four.

You might think that, with the Range Rover badge on the front, Land Rover would endow the new model with a lot of visible technology. But, the word that Range Rover has coined for the design philosophy is “reductionism” and it refers to the design team’s desire to reduce complexity.

For example, the number of switches has been kept to an absolute minimum, with some controls being completely hidden until they are lit. There are two ten-inch touchscreens that are designed not be seen until they are illuminated.

The exterior design establishes this very clearly as a member of the Range Rover family but distinctive features of the design include the very slim LED headlights and, somewhat reminiscent of the Jaguar F-type, flush door handles that pop out when needed.

In line with the up-market aim for Range Rovers, air suspension will be standard on all six-cylinder Velars, along with all-wheel drive and an optional active locking rear differential to help keep the Velar going in really tough conditions.

Towing ability is very important for this market and the Velar will have a towing capacity of 2,500kg. Anyone who has struggled to reverse with a trailer (that would be me) will welcome the optional ‘Advanced Tow Assist’ system that does away with the need to counter steer.

The Velar will come with a choice of six powertrains, starting with the 180PS two-litre Ingenium diesel, ascending to a 380PS petrol three-litre V6.

Safety systems include Autonomous Emergency Braking with pedestrian detection, Reverse Traffic Detection and Driver Condition Monitoring.
