Maserati Levante spied on autostrade

On a recent trip to Italy we spotted the new Maserati Levante on the A14 autostrade near Imola. The car appeared so suddenly we had no time to get cameras organised, so this was taken on an iPhone.

The car was still wearing disguise, but given that it was not far from the company’s base in Modena and the three small square ’vents’ on its flanks ahead of the door, it seems pretty clear that it is the new Levante – Maserati’s first venture into the SUV market.

With the Levante, Maserati have cars like Porsche Cayenne, Range Rover Sport, Jaguar F-Pace, BMW X6 and even the Bentley Bentayga in its sights. The Levante will take Maserati into one of the few sectors of the motor market that still shows strong growth.

The new Levante is expected to be powered by a choice of two twin-turbo V6 engines, with an 400+ bhp from the more powerful version. Four-wheel-drive is expected mated to an eight-speed automatic gearbox. Sales are expected to start in some markets this autumn.

Maserati have denied that the Levante will be the first of a series of SUVs from the company, saying that they do not want to compete with other SUVs that come under the Fiat-Chrysler banner.
