TVR to return with Cosworth-powered sports car

TVR, one of Britain’s best-loved specialist sports car brands, should return to the market in 2017 with an all-new Cosworth-powered sports car.

The history of TVR goes back to 1946 when Trevor Wilkinson started Trevcar Motors in Blackpool, it was later renamed TVR Engineering, building its first original chassis in 1949. Like so many small car manufacturers, TVR struggled in the era of mass production and the company fell into liquidation in November 1964.

TVR returns

But TVR refused to die and perhaps its most successful era was in the 1980s under the ownership of Peter Wheeler, when the range included cars like the Chimaera, Griffith, Cerbera, Tuscan, Tamora, T350, Typhon and Sagaris. In 2013, the business was bought by Nikolay Smolensky, but sales began to decline and a period of turmoil followed. TVR disappeared from the market.

Few believed that TVR could return to glory, but in 2013 the remaining parts of the TVR business were sold to TVR Automotive Ltd, a UK company owned by Les Edgar.

Today that new company has announced its intention to bring TVR back to the market with an all-new British-designed and built sports car. The new car is being designed in collaboration with Gordon Murray Design and Cosworth, with these partners providing much of the core design and engineering capability for the all-new TVR.

TVR say the project is already well advanced with over a year of development completed so far. But, further details of the new TVR will not be released until later this year.

However, the company has said the new TVR will continue the tradition of a classic British two-seat sports car. It will be traditional in that it will have a front engine and rear-wheel-drive, but it will utilise modern aerodynamics, with a composite ground effect aero chassis. We also know that will be powered by a normally aspirated, dry-sumped, V8 engine, developed and engineered by Cosworth.

TVR say that production of the car will begin in 2017 in a new UK factory.

“We know that a new TVR has to be better than just good – it has to be outstanding,” Les Edgar, Chairman of TVR said of the announcement: “From the outset we only wanted to work with the best partners in the business, and both Gordon Murray’s and Cosworth’s track records within motor sport and high performance car design and engineering speaks for themselves.”

Speaking of his involvement in the project, Gordon Murray, Chairman of Gordon Murray Design said: “TVR is an iconic brand which has been an important part of British sports car manufacturing for many decades. Its return to manufacturing is an exciting development and the car deserves the best chassis and powertrain that can possibly be delivered.”
